Heritage and Native Learners
The Department of Languages, Literatures, and Cultures at ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵsupports heritage and native speakers of languages other than English so that they can develop their linguistic and cultural skills. Being bilingual is a significant advantage in our global job market. Our different language programs can help heritage and native learners develop their skills at an academic and professional level, while learning more about the linguistic practices, cultures, and arts and literatures of their heritage or native communities.
Heritage Learner
You are considered a heritage learner if you completed high school in the United States, but you were exposed to a language other than English at home or in your community from a young age. If you are a heritage learner, please click on the links within the table below for more information on specific language programs.
Native Learner
You are considered a native learner if you completed high school in a country other than the U.S., including the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and your primary language of instruction was not English. If you are a native learner, please click on the links within the table below for more information on specific language programs.

French, German, and Italian for Heritage and Native Learners

Heritage or native students who plan to continue advanced study of French, Italian, or German must first take the placement exam in that language to determine their level of proficiency.

After taking the exam and obtaining their results, students must consult with the Chair of the Department of Languages, Literatures and Cultures before registering for an advanced language level foreignlang@marquette.edu or call (414) 288-7063.
Spanish for Heritage and Native Learners
Marquette’s Spanish program offers courses specifically designed for heritage and native learners to help them gain a competitive edge in many careers. Our courses develop language skills at an academic and professional level, while learning about the diversity of the Spanish-speaking world and about linguistic practices, cultures, arts and literatures in Latin America, Spain and Latinx communities in the U.S.
Spanish for heritage and native speakers´ courses also fulfill several ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵCore of Common Studies requirements and can be taken to fulfill graduation and language requirements even if the student is not planning on completing a major or minor in Spanish.

Heritage Learner

You are considered a native speaker if you completed high school in a Spanish-speaking country other than the U.S., including the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, and your primary language of instruction was Spanish. El programa de ·¡²õ±è²¹Ã±´Ç±ô de ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵofrece cursos especÃficamente diseñados para estudiantes de herencia y nativos que les ayudarán a ganar una ventaja competitiva en sus carreras. Nuestros cursos permiten desarrollar las habilidades lingüÃsticas a nivel profesional y académico, mientras se aprende sobre la diversidad del mundo hispanohablante y sobre las prácticas lingüÃsticas, culturas, artes y literaturas de Latinoamérica, España y las comunidades latinx en los EE.UU.
Los cursos de español para hablantes de herencia y nativos también sirven para cumplir con algunos de los requisitos del ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵCore of Common Studies y se pueden tomar para satisfacer requisitos de lengua o de graduación incluso si el estudiante no está planeado completar una especialización o una subespecialización en español.

Estudiantes de herencia
Un estudiante es considerado un hablante de herencia de español si completó la secundaria en los EE.UU., pero creció escuchando o hablando español en casa o en su comunidad. Estudiantes nativos
Un estudiante es considerado un hablante nativo si completó la secundaria en un paÃs hispanohablante que no es los EE.UU., incluyendo el Estado Libre Asociado de Puerto Rico, y su idioma principal de instrucción fue el español.
