Student Learning Outcomes for French Major

  1. Students will speak and write in French at the Advanced Low proficiency level or higher, as defined in the ACTFL Guidelines.

  2. Students will read and listen in French at the Advanced Low proficiency level or higher, as defined in the ACTFL Guidelines.

  3. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the literatures of the French-speaking world.

  4. Students will demonstrate knowledge of the cultures of the French-speaking world.

  5. Students will use their French to interact with French and Francophone communities at home, abroad, and in their careers.

  6. Students will demonstrate linguistic and intercultural competence to use their French in professional contexts.

Student Learning Outcomes for German Studies Major

  1. Students will speak and write in German at the Advanced Low proficiency level, or higher, as defined in the ACTFL Guidelines.

  2. Students will read and listen in German at the Advanced Low proficiency level or higher, as defined in the ACTFL Guidelines.

  3. Students will demonstrate skills of critical thinking and aesthetic interpretation through structured interpretive writing.

  4. Students will develop knowledge of contemporary Germany and the European context, including historical and political understanding of the German context.

  5. Students will develop basic familiarity with the task of translation from German into English as a professional use of linguistic skills.

BA in Spanish Language, Literature and Culture

Students will be able to:

1. Speak and write in Spanish at the Advanced Low proficiency level or higher, as defined in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.

2. Read and listen in Spanish at the Advanced Low proficiency level or higher, as defined in the ACTFL Proficiency Guidelines.

3. Articulate and analyze the literatures of the Spanish-speaking world using discipline-specific approaches and methodologies.

4. Articulate and analyze issues surrounding Hispanic linguistics with discipline-specific approaches and methodologies.

5. Articulate and analyze issues surrounding Latin American, Iberian, and US Latinx communities.

6. Use Spanish with Hispanic and Latinx communities at home, abroad, and in their careers.

7. Develop critical thinking and cross-disciplinary problem-solving skills that can be used in a wide range of professional and academic contexts now and in the future.

 

BA in Spanish for the Professions

  1. Analyze and articulate issues surrounding the political, economic, social, and cultural dynamics of the Latin American region with an interdisciplinary approach and using discipline-specific methodologies.
  2. Articulate and analyze issues of the Latin American and US Hispanic communities in terms of their controlling interests, power structures and justice.
  3. Demonstrate Advanced Low Proficiency in Spanish as measured by the ACTFL scale in all four areas of language use (speaking, listening, reading, and writing).
  4. Be prepared to enter professional fields or areas of graduate study in one of many fields related to Latin American Studies, such as business, law, journalism, education, public policy, public health, and social work.
