We invite you to join us for our annual Women's Luncheon. This year we welcome Sara Dahmen, Comm '05. Sara is a coppersmith, award-winning author and novelist, and entrepreneur. Her expertise is vintage and modern cookware; she manufactures pure metal kitchenware in her Wisconsin garage for her company, House Copper & Cookware. All of her current designs are based on American traditions and wares and are sourced in the U.S. When unable to re-create traditional elements, she uses only small family owned and operated makers or armed forces veterans to help with the production of her cookware pieces. Her work includes refurbishing and restoring old and damaged copper using vintage tools.
Sara has published more than 100 articles as a contributing editor for various trade magazines, has written for Edible and Root + Bone, among others, and spoke at TEDx Rapid City. Her historical fiction series is in print as the Flats Junction Series (Promontory Press Inc.) and is in development for TV, with Tinsmith 1865 and Widow 1881 as the first two books available.

The Diedrich College of Communication presented its 2023 Lucius W. Nieman Symposium. The topic was Stewards of the Earth? Environmental Justice and the Role of Journalism. Climate change has been acknowledged as a major threat to international peace and security. From national disasters to economic disruption, climate change has become a catalyst for social inequity and even violent conflict worldwide. Panelists included (Co-Executive Director, Milwaukee Water Commons), (Environmental Journalist), Dr. Samantha Majhor (Assistant Professor of English), and moderator Dr. Ayleen Cabas-Mijares (Assistant Professor of Journalism and Media Studies). In honor of Women's Entrepreneurship Day, IWL and the 707 Hub hosted their first annual "WE are the Difference" half-day workshop on Friday, November 18, 2022. This event provided an afternoon of networking, exploring entrepreneurial mindset, and celebrating a wide array of local women entrepreneurs.
The workshop included a keynote address from , founder and CMO of True Grace Health; a workshop on discernment led by Marquette's own Dr. Liz Angeli; and a panel discussion featuring amazing female entrepreneurs, including of The White Agency and of Liv a Little Ice Cream! An assortment of snacks were provided by local, woman-owned restaurants and catering companies.
While the event highlighted women entrepreneurs, we welcomed and strongly encouraged attendees of all genders to join us in this celebration of creativity and learn more about how an entrepreneurial mindset can be a valuable tool for everyone.

This, the second IWL Social of the Fall 2022 semester, featured a story exchange lead by trained facilitators from Marquette's chapter of the global nonprofit . Narrative 4鈥檚 motto is 鈥渇earless hope through radical empathy,鈥 and the theme for this story exchange focuses on courage with the following prompts:
- Tell a story about a time when you witnessed courage in the workplace, and talk about the impact it had on you and others.
- Thinking way back to early memories, tell a story about the first time you remember feeling brave. What did that feel like? Was it helpful? How did others respond?
- Tell a story about a time when you wish you would have been brave, but you couldn't.
- Susan Sontag wrote, "Courage is as contagious as fear." Tell a story about a time when you experienced this as true. Talk about the impact it had.

The Center for the Advancement of the Humanities (CfAH) is delighted to announce the Fall 2021 line-up of the Humanities Research Colloquium. Our first speaker will be Dr. Melissa Shew, Visiting Associate Professor of Philosophy and Senior Faculty Fellow at the Center for Teaching and Learning. On Monday, October 18, at 4 p.m. via Teams, she will present 鈥Women and Intellectual Empowerment: A TEDx Talk.鈥 In this reprise of her Spring 2020 TEDx talk, she examines the problem of female disempowerment in the workplace. By considering the problem through a series of philosophical lenses, she proposes accessible solutions for all to practice and implement. She will also reflect on what she learned about presenting her research in this forum and offer tips for anyone interested in giving such a talk. She will connect these insights to what she calls "epistemic joy," which articulates her desire to give the talk in the middle of a pandemic in the first place.

Koch will share the journey of the Pride BRG and how it has grown over the years through creating meaningful events, establishing connections with the community and gaining leadership support for all BRGs at Kohl鈥檚.

On May 17 at 6 p.m., join the O鈥橞rien Fellowship in Public Service Journalism for an evening of film and conversation about how we can better support families during the postpartum period. The virtual event is free to the public, but you must register in advance. Filmmaker Ade Osinubi will screen her short film, 鈥淧artum.鈥 The film is part of Osinubi鈥檚 documentary project called 鈥淏lack Motherhood Through the Lens.鈥 Following the screening, we鈥檒l hear from Wisconsin-based birth workers about how new parents are faring amid COVID-19, police violence and a prolonged period of isolation, grief, anxiety, and fear.

In March 2020, state governments began issuing 鈥淪afer-at-Home鈥 orders to mitigate the spread of COVID-19. But for women living with abusive partners, being quarantined at home was anything but safe. Andrea Schneider, professor of law in the 向日葵视频 Law School and director for the Institute for Women鈥檚 Leadership, has created a research team to analyze the effect these orders had on the prevalence of domestic abuse cases, and their impact on the wellness and mental health of survivors.
Hear how this team, in partnership with Milwaukee County Circuit Court and the Sojourner Family Peace Center, is working toward improving services for survivors during the pandemic, to enhance court processes, and to guide best practices in advising workplaces on how to respond to Intimate Partner Violence.
This project was a winner of the 2020 President's Challenge, which provided funding for innovative, interdisciplinary, collaborative work addressing needs in Milwaukee鈥檚 community that have been created or magnified by the COVID-19 pandemic and representing critical areas in the community鈥檚 recovery efforts.

The 2021 Nieman Symposium focuses on a timely critique of the history, impact, and value of objectivity in American journalism. As journalism in the U.S. evolved, its principles and practices grew alongside the dominant white (male, cisgender, and heterosexual) perspective. In this context, the principle of objectivity has virtually been conflated with whiteness, resulting in the silencing, stereotyping and/or distorting of BIPOC identities, and issues.鈥&苍产蝉辫;鈥In this symposium, prominent journalists and media scholars will reflect together on this history and discuss how the journalism profession can improve its quality, regain BIPOC communities鈥 trust, and fulfill its promise of guarding democracy.
