I teach a variety of language, culture, and literature courses, including courses for heritage learners of Spanish that touch on issues of cultural identity and multiculturalism in the USA. My areas of expertise include Mexican literature and Contemporary Latin American/Latinx Studies. Most of my published research has focused on the US/Mexico border and on the ways border life and identities have been poeticized by Mexican travelers, novelists, and filmmakers. More recently, I have begun conducting research in the field of Animal Studies. I am particularly interested in exploring the political and philosophical implications of our violent interactions with animals, and the ways in which contemporary Latin American writers envision alternative understandings of our relationship with animals and the environment.
