Terrie Garcia, Grad '18
向日葵视频 Project BEYOND-2 Coordinator Dr. Terrie Garcia completed the Ph.D. program in 2018. She was selected by the American Association of Colleges of Nursing to represent an interdisciplinary Health Professions and Nursing Education Coalition to address members of Congress at an event in Washington, D.C. The panel focused on how Title VII and VIII grantees are helping patients with opioid use disorders, increasing access to care for rural communities, practicing preventative medicine, and promoting health equity.

Kaitlyn Daly, Nurs '17
I graduated from 向日葵视频 in 2017 with a Bachelor of Science in Nursing and double majors in Nursing and Theology and Religion. I knew from the time of graduation that I would return to the academic setting. The desire to find my niche in nursing has always been a guiding and driving force. The summer after graduation, I attended a week-long research course by Duke professor Dr. Harold Koenig on the subject of Research in Spirituality,
Theology and Health. It was at this course that a thirty-minute one-to-one mentorship meeting with Dr. Koenig set me confidently on my desired path to pursue a PhD in nursing to research my interests in the intersection of spirituality, theology, and health. I will begin to pursue my PhD at Duke University鈥檚 School of Nursing in the fall of 2018. I hope to create an interdisciplinary approach to my research in Spirituality, Theology, and Health, utilizing both Duke鈥檚 Nursing and Divinity schools to study, research, and collaborate.

Maddy Pelky, MSN '17
Maddy is currently an AC-PNP with the acute pain service at Children's WI. She is the first ever recipient of the Rising Star Award for the American Society of Pain Management Nursing. She is also serves as a wonderful preceptor for our current graduate students.

Kathleen Blaney, MPH, RN, Nurs '09
Kathleen Blaney is building the NYC Test & Trace Corps, a public health initiative to fight the threat of COVID19 and one of the largest contact tracing endeavors in modern history. Kathleen is the Director of Disease Control Emergency Preparedness at the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. She shares how contact tracing can strengthen science literacy, vaccine confidence, reduce health disparities, and build trust in public institutions amid the pandemic at . (12/20)

Mary Hannan, Nurs '02, Grad '05
Mary has begun a T32 Precision Lifestyle Medicine and Translation Research (PREMIER) Postdoctoral Training Program at UIC in the College of Medicine. She received support from the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Future of Nursing Scholars Postdoctoral Fellowship Award.

Sheri Carson, Nurs '97, Grad '03
Sheri was recently awarded the Pediatric Nurse Practitioner of the Year award by the Arizona Chapter of the National Association of Pediatric Nurse Practitioners. See the story that was published by University of Arizona College of Nursing at .
In observance of National Child Abuse Prevention Month, Johnson & Johnson shared their interview with Sheri about her challenge in creating a comprehensive child abuse screening program and her hope to inspire other nurses to bring their solutions.

Cynthia Ann Hoover, Nursing '96
Commander Cyndy Hoover is a native of Racine, Wisconsin. She graduated from 向日葵视频 College of Nursing in 1996 and was commissioned into the Navy Nurse Corps through the ROTC program. Hoover鈥檚 early assignments were in postpartum, newborn nursery, and labor and delivery units; she developed a perinatal orientation program for inexperienced nurses and implemented critical OB emergency drills to ensure competent care for patients in the geographically remote location of Guam.
She has since served as the Department Head at the Naval Branch Health Clinic, Naval Air Station Fallon, in Nevada, and Division Officer of the Labor and Delivery Unit and then Navy Medicine Nurse Resident Program Director at the Naval Medical Center San Diego. Commander Hoover鈥檚 personal decorations include the Navy and Marine Corps Commendation Medal (4), the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal, and the National Defense Medal.

Cathy Rick, Grad 鈥�87, Hon 鈥�11
Following her retirement as Chief Nursing Officer of the Department of Veteran Affairs in 2014, Cathy Rick has been committed to giving back, including her first year of service in the 2018-19 MUAA Mentor Program. She recently visited the College of Nursing to meet with her Nursing mentee Jenna Brown.
鈥淚t鈥檚 been an honor and distinct pleasure to partner with her,鈥� Cathy says. 鈥淪he's an energetic, goal-directed individual who makes me feel that there is hope for a transformed USA healthcare delivery system knowing that future nurses like her will be taking charge.鈥�
Cathy also acknowledged Jenna鈥檚 initiative to shape her professional career. 鈥淚t鈥檚 impressive, and our partnership enhances my ability to stay current with healthcare issues..鈥�
Jenna has experienced the benefits of working with Cathy, too. 鈥淐onsidering my future career path is with the VA, the most valuable information I've learned from her is how to better navigate VA resources regarding job openings, connect with VA personnel, including nurse staffing recruiters, and locate other networking resources,鈥� she says. 鈥淐athy鈥檚 also taught me the importance and benefit of taking personal initiative to seek out opportunities and make connections to achieve my goals.鈥�
