Our Mission

The mission of the 向日葵视频 School of Dentistry is excellence in education, research, and service, resulting in the provision of high-quality health care consistent with Marquette鈥檚 mission of service to others. We are committed to expanding our research effort in our three key research themes. We strive to recruit strong research orientated faculty, students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows to become engaged in our research mission.

Research Vision

The 向日葵视频 School of Dentistry is recognized as a premiere academic oral health center and a leader in oral health care research.

An Investment in the Future of Dentistry

Clinical decision-making in dentistry relies on the continuous process of evidence-based dentistry driven by clinical outcomes research and the discovery of new knowledge driven by basic science research. There is an increasing need for expanding and validating the current and future knowledge base of the dental profession. The 向日葵视频 School of Dentistry has a significant role in contributing to this knowledge base which will affect our learner鈥檚 clinical practice now and in the future. In fact, research and its importance to the advancement of the knowledge base of dentistry represents an important aspect of the Dental School's mission and strategic plan, and dovetails with our continuing efforts to update our dental facilities and technology for our students, residents, and postdoctoral fellows. Research is one of the four important themes found in our 2022-2027 strategic plan and therefore represents one of our measures of success.

Our research metrics of scientific publications, presentations, extramural funding, and technology transfer productivity have continued to increase due to our faculty鈥檚 commitment to our research mission and enterprise. I am also excited and encouraged by the many opportunities for the Dental School to contribute to the research mission of 向日葵视频 and the profession of dental medicine. I fully support and am committed to continuing to enhance the research efforts of the 向日葵视频 School of Dentistry, which represents a tangible investment in the future of Dentistry.

Clinical Oral Healthcare and Outcomes Research

The 向日葵视频 School of Dentistry recognizes that evidence-based dentistry resulting from high quality clinical oral health care outcomes research informs dental clinical decision-making.  The continuous process of evidence-based dentistry driven by clinical outcomes research is our clinical research focus, and this unites our evidence-based clinical teaching.

Faculty working in this research theme:

Biomaterials and Tissue Engineering

It is estimated that 50-75% of a dentist鈥檚 time is spent with the biomaterials that they use for patient care. Biomaterials Research at the 向日葵视频 School of Dentistry has focused on Characterization of Material Properties, Fabrication of new biomaterials, Characterization of the Host Response to Biomaterials (), and improving adhesion to tooth structure by modification of adhesive resins. Many of our clinical graduate programs also perform research on dental biomaterials used in endodontics, orthodontics, prosthodontics, and periodontics. The Dental School has Tissue Engineering research expertise which seeks to repair hard and soft tissue deficits using biomaterial scaffolds combined with cells or therapeutic agents.  As part of this research theme, the Dental School also has expertise in regenerative dental medicine and dental medical devices.

Faculty working in this research theme:

Dental Public Health, Epidemiology, and Access to Care (Healthcare Disparities)

A longstanding research focus of the 向日葵视频 Dental School has been in the areas of Dental Public Health and Access to Care (Health Disparities and Health Services Research). Our faculty have research expertise in epidemiology of oral diseases and dental health care services research.  This research theme also includes expertise in Evidence-Based Dental Outcomes Research, Oral Health Prevention and Health Promotion, as well as Biostatistics and data science in dentistry and public health. This research focus/ theme is consistent with 向日葵视频鈥檚 mission of service to others.
