Dental Biomaterials program

The M.S. program in Dental Biomaterials is offered to individuals who want to pursue advanced study in dental biomaterials. A major component of the program is conducting a research project, culminating in the successful completion of a master鈥檚 thesis and defense.

The curriculum is structured to provide a broad overview of the use of materials science in dentistry ().

Courses cover topics such as:

Metallurgy
Ceramics
Polymers
Mechanical behavior
Cements
Experimental techniques as they apply to dental biomaterials

Training in methods, techniques and instrumentation used in dental biomaterials research are also extended to students.

Who typically applies or enrolls in the dental biomaterials M.S. program?

Although not exclusive to the following, past applicants have been U.S. and international dental school graduates; dental hygiene and dental technology graduates with a strong science background; non-dental students with a background in science or engineering; and students wanting to improve their credentials for subsequent application to dental, medical or Ph.D. programs.

How long is the dental biomaterials M.S. program?

The program may be completed in two academic years.

What is the dental biomaterials tuition?

The tuition is listed on the Tuition and Costs webpage. During the course of two years, students take approximately 32 credit hours.

Is financial aid available?

Applicants are advised to consult the Graduate School Financial Aid website. Teaching assistantships in the dental biomaterials program are not typically available. Research assistantships are occasionally available, but rely on current funding status of program faculty.

When is the application deadline?

There is no strict deadline, but applicants are encouraged to have their complete application submitted by February to be considered for the fall entry class. Spring semester entry is possible every other year (odd years).

Is the GRE required for admission to the dental biomaterials program?

The GRE is not required for admission, but is highly recommended.
