As Wisconsin’s only dental school, we offer you the most advanced clinical resources and instructional technology available. Every step you take in our program will be guided by faculty and practicing professionals who uphold Marquette’s vision: to train highly skilled oral health care practitioners to bring top-quality dental care to urban and rural communities across the country — and around the world. We’ll prepare you to enter practice immediately upon graduation.

ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵ the dental biomaterials master's program

Graduate students in dental biomaterials pursue the application of scientific principles to the study of dental biomaterials including relationships among compositions, physical properties, and clinical properties for dental biomaterial systems.

The MS program in dental biomaterials is offered to individuals who want to pursue advanced study in dental biomaterials. A major component of the program is conducting a research project culminating in the successful completion of a master’s thesis and defense. Training in methods, techniques and instrumentation used in dental biomaterials research are also extended to students.

Interdisciplinary Program

The dental biomaterials graduate program is an interdisciplinary program covering principles of materials science, engineering, chemistry, physics, biology, and dentistry. Satisfactory completion of the didactic and research components of the program results in a master’s degree through the ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵ Graduate School.

In addition to the courses offered by the School of Dentistry, master’s candidates may be required by their program adviser to select courses offered through the Department of Mathematics, Statistics and Computer Science or other departments. Elective courses in appropriate areas such as the dental graduate core curriculum (from the School of Dentistry) or materials science (from the College of Engineering) may also be selected according to the backgrounds and interests of the individual students.

Course Work Highlights

The curriculum is structured to provide a broad overview of the use of materials science in dentistry.

Courses cover topics such as:

  • Metallurgy
  • Ceramics
  • Polymers
  • Mechanical behavior
  • Cements
  • Experimental techniques as they apply to dental biomaterials

Opportunities in teaching dental biomaterials and training in methods, techniques and instrumentation used in dental biomaterials research are also extended to students.

Coursework

A student in the dental biomaterials program must complete a minimum of 30 credit hours of course work, consisting of a curriculum of graduate dental biomaterials courses (23 credits), statistics (3)  and thesis work (6). More course work information can be found on the .

In addition, applicants may also apply through the Postdoctoral Application Support Service (PASS) operated by the American Dental Education Association (ADEA), but it is not required.
  2. Transcripts:
    • Submit copies of all current and previous college/universities except Marquette1
  3. Three letters of recommendation reflecting the applicant’s clinical and academic abilities.
  4. GRE scores strongly recommended (General Test only).
  5. A curriculum vitae and a personal statement.
  6. (For international applicants only) a TOEFL score or other acceptable proof of English proficiency.

1 Upon admission, final official transcripts from all previously attended colleges/universities, with certified English translations if original language is not English, must be submitted to the Graduate School within the first five weeks of the term of admission or a hold preventing registration for future terms will be placed on the student’s record.

Teaching assistantships in the Dental Biomaterials program are not typically available. Research assistantships are occasionally available but rely on current funding status of program faculty. Private scholarships may be available. U.S. citizens and permanent residents may be eligible to apply for need-based federal aid (loans) to help fund their educational expenses.
