The Summer Program for Undergraduate Research (SPUR) has been offered at the Medical College of Wisconsin (MCW) for 40 years. During that time, SPUR has hosted hundreds of students who have since made significant contributions to science and humanity through their current positions as teachers, instructors, professors, researchers, industry professionals, government leaders and clinicians.  SPUR hosts roughly 35 participants each summer from across the country who gain valuable research experience, refine critical thinking skills, build upon academic and professional networks and are introduced to various disciplines of science.  Participation in SPUR is intended for students who are currently enrolled at an accredited college or university who intend to pursue scientific-based graduate studies.

For over thirty years, the ABF has hosted exceptional undergraduate students as they learn new research skills, meet with local legal professionals, and explore career paths within the sociolegal field. Open to current college sophomores and juniors, this program provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity for intellectually curious and justice-motivated students to delve into the ABF’s world-class research. Fellows will participate in the program 35 hours a week in our Chicago, IL, office on a hybrid schedule from June 9 to August 1, 2025, and receive a stipend of $6,000.

Operated by the Partnership for Public Service, the  places young talent at the US Patent & Trade Office (USPTO) and other federal agencies. Intellectual property careers -

Interested in a career in intellectual property? Learn more about what it entails to be a patent agent and apply your biology education to the world of patents and intellectual property (IP). Imagine starting your career working side by side with IP leaders as part of the USPTO’s. Innovation Interns will receive virtual hands-on experience by engaging in a variety of diverse and challenging activities. The internship will be full-time telework during summer breaks and part-time during the school year.

with the Leadership Alliance

The Summer Research Early Identification Program (SR-EIP) is a fully paid summer internship that provides undergraduates with training and mentoring in the principles underlying the conduct of research and prepares them to pursue competitive applications to PhD or MD-PhD programs. 

The SR-EIP offers closely mentored research experiences in the life and physical sciences, social and behavioral sciences, and the humanities at 20 different research institutions across the country (includes Brown University, Columbia/NY, California Institute of Technology, Dartmouth College, Harvard, Princeton, Johns Hopkins etc.,) .

SR-EIP Participants...

• Spend 8–10 weeks at a 
• Receive a stipend, and travel and housing expenses from the research institution.
• Work under the guidance of a faculty or research mentor.
• Gain theoretical knowledge and practical training in academic research and scientific experimentation.
• Make oral or poster presentations at the Leadership Alliance National Symposium.
• Gain access to ongoing resources, mentoring, and professional networks to support your career path as a part of the Leadership Alliance community.
• Receive professional development mentoring on applying to graduate programs and learn about research careers from alumni.

Science Undergraduate Laboratory Internship (SULI) – Department of Energy – Office of Science

When you join you’ll be part of a Department of Energy (DOE) team that’s working together to advance scientific impact and discovery. Expand your skills and knowledge at a DOE national laboratory using state-of-the-art facilities and advanced scientific instruments. Each year, students from around the country participate in SULI at one of the 17 participating DOE laboratories/facilities. In this comprehensive internship, you’ll be mentored by a leading science expert who will guide you in a specific research area to gain maximum exposure to one of the many science and technology areas that underpin the U.S. Department of Energy’s (DOE’s) diverse missions. This is an opportunity for you to enhance your professional network and develop your interests in state-of-the-art research facilities and to enhance your professional network. SULI is a paid internship opportunity sponsored and managed by the DOE Office of Science’s Office of Workforce Development for Teachers and Scientists (WDTS) in collaboration with DOE laboratories/facilities. Students can participate in SULI either in a 10-week summer internship (May–August) or in a semester-long experience (August–December or January–May).
