A scientist-practitioner model program, accredited by the American Psychological Association

Our doctoral program in counseling psychology is based on a scientist-practitioner model for training professional psychologists and is fully accredited by the  (APA). Students acquire a solid foundation of knowledge in the biological, cognitive, affective, individual and social bases of human behavior.

  • Accomplished research faculty: Our faculty is involved in providing community engaged research and service with a strong commitment to multicultural and diversity research. Two of our faculty are fellows of APA divisions.
  • Highly diverse practicum training experiences in premier hospitals and with veterans affairs care providers
  • Student success: A large majority of students are receiving their top-ranked internship, and students are also receiving highly competitive post-doctoral placements. Students receive strong research training, including the opportunity to work with nationally and internationally known qualitative researchers. Many of our alumni continue to be highly accomplished leaders in their respective areas of specialty.

Learning Outcomes

In this PhD programs, we prepare students to:

  • Attain a breadth of knowledge in psychology and integrate the knowledge in student's work as health service psychologists. Students become knowledgeable in the history of science and psychology, plus gain and integrate knowledge of affective aspects of behavior in clinical practice including biological, developmental, social, and cognitive.
  • Produce quality research to improve the lives of others. Students acquire knowledge of research methodology and techniques of data analysis and conduct empirical studies on topics important to clinical and professional practice or concerns. Students are also prepared to disseminate these findings in community and professional settings.
  • Engage in a range of professional activities important to health service psychology, such as behavioral and psychological assessment, clinical interventions, supervision, consultation, and research. Students gain experience and achieve competence in multiple roles important to health service psychology as part of their research and clinical training. As such, students have opportunities to learn how to provide clinical services, supervise, and provide consultation services.
  • Integrate science and clinical practice and use this integration to inform their activities as health service psychologists. Students are trained in and knowledgeable of theories and methods of diagnosis, assessment and psychological measurement, effective and evidence.

Career Opportunities

Graduates are prepared to practice as psychologists, professors, consultants, administrators and researchers. Many go on to take leadership positions that include training directors, lead psychologists, clinical supervisors, clinic directors or presidents of private practices. Others go on to attain faculty positions or pursue opportunities that combine teaching, practice and research.

Faculty Accomplishments

Dr. Alan Burkard has a 2 million dollar SAMHSA grant focused on providing providing evidence-based interventions to children under the age of six. 

Drs. Sarah Knox and Lynne Knobloch-Fedders are both fellows of the .

Dr. Lisa Edwards is known nationally for her work with positive psychology and Latinx research.

Dr. Sarah Knox is nationally and internationally known for her work as a qualitative researcher.

To be eligible for admission to the Graduate School at 向日葵视频, applicants must meet the following requirements:

Many students accepted into the doctoral program have already completed a master鈥檚 degree in counseling or counseling psychology, though some have only have a bachelor's degree. Students applying to the doctoral program without a master鈥檚 degree must complete prerequisite master's courses as part of their doctoral program requirements. We also highly recommend that students without a master鈥檚 in counseling or counseling psychology obtain experience in a human service setting (e.g., fieldwork, volunteering, or employment) to discern if the field is a good fit for their long-term professional goals. 

Application Requirements

Read all application instructions prior to beginning an application.

  • For international applicants only: a TOEFL score or other acceptable proof of English proficiency.
  • After all applications are reviewed, the highest ranking applicants will be contacted for an interview with the faculty. This is required for admission. International applicants residing in foreign countries and applicants with extenuating circumstances may conduct their interviews over the phone. These interviews are normally held on the last Friday in January. 

1Upon admission, final official transcripts from all previously attended colleges/universities, with certified English translations if original language is not English, must be submitted to the Graduate School within the first five weeks of the term of admission or a hold preventing registration for future terms will be placed on the student鈥檚 record. 

December 2: Application and application materials should be received to be considered for the fall term.

In recent years, new full-time doctoral students have been supported by part-time research assistantships through the department. Scholarships have helped some additional students, and a variety of fellowships and other options are available.

U.S. citizens and permanent residents may be eligible to apply for need-based federal aid (loans) to help fund their educational expenses as well.
