Create and support opportunities for inclusive scholarship, teaching, and learning

Diversity, equity and inclusion plan for 2020-2023

Enrich the campus environment and culture for diversity scholarship and for the development of diverse learning opportunities, as foundational to Jesuit higher learning. Provide greater opportunities for inclusion of diverse cultures and communities in curricula, in out-of-class learning, and in research and scholarship.

Strategic Priorities

Strengthen infrastructure to support academic programs, interdisciplinary programs, and centers that enrich the cultural diversity of the campus, particularly regarding race, ethnicity, indigeneity, gender and gender identity, linguistic heritage, and other dimensions of diversity.

Task Status

Ongoing

Support the development of interdisciplinary academic initiatives, such as Race, Ethnic, and Indigenous Studies (REIS), as they contribute to a more diverse learning environment.

In progress: Co-directors were named in 2021 and the infrastructure for the REIS program is currently being built to integrate existing academic programs, create new courses and programs of study, and develop interdisciplinary networks for faculty research. Needs have been identified for more systematic funding for REIS through resource reallocation. Starting in 2021, a three-year funding structure was approved by the Provost and supported by the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion.

Completed: The Spanish for Heritage Speakers program has gained critical infrastructure through the creation of a coordinator position and additional resources to respond to its growth in recent years.

Since spring 2019, the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion has provided small grants to faculty who develop new courses or significantly revise existing courses to infuse diverse themes, inclusive pedagogical practices, and/or community-engaged learning opportunities for their students. The REIS program began administering these grants in 2022.

Task Status

Ongoing

Support collaboration between Center for Teaching and Learning, the Office of Institutional Diversity and Inclusion, Title IX and other entities on presenting training and workshops.
