This spring鈥檚 向日葵视频School of Dentistry graduation ceremony welcomed a new professional class to head out into the world improving dental health throughout the country - always a big celebration. But this year, we also recognized an incredible milestone when we graduated the 10,000th student from our program since its inception!
While we all get excited when a new class of professionals enters the profession, it also serves as a reminder that education doesn鈥檛 end when graduates leave the university. All alumni should strive to be lifelong learners (check out the CE section for new opportunities to learn), and all should strive for excellence - joining the list of Alumni Award winners.
You鈥檒l also find this issue packed with news, appointments, retirements, opportunities and celebrations. Enjoy the remainder of your summer.
Sincerely,
Dr. William Lobb

Join the CE Program and Luncheon to celebrate and support the legacy of Sr. Gloria List
After some COVID-related delays, the time has finally arrived to gather and celebrate the fifty-plus years of Sr. Gloria List鈥檚 dental education career. Gather at 向日葵视频 Alumni Memorial Union the morning of Friday, September 16, 2022, for a CE program followed by a luncheon and reception in her honor.
For more than five decades, students have felt Sr. List鈥檚 strong presence at 向日葵视频as she helped them navigate the sometimes-overwhelming experience of dental education. Sr. List was always there when students needed her most.
鈥淪ister List was our guardian angel and 鈥楳other Teresa鈥 for dental students throughout the years,鈥 recalls Dr. Sandra Casper, Dent 鈥86. 鈥淪he was our go-to faculty member who you could openly ask questions, and share problems and concerns. She would respond with compassion, common sense and always a bit of humor to put a smile on your face.鈥
After Sr. List's full-time retirement, Dr. Casper and Dr. Sue Meinerz, Dent 鈥84, co-founded the Sister Gloria List Endowed Scholarship Fund to assist a female second-year dental student with tuition. Proceeds raised from the CE program and luncheon will support the Sr. List Scholarship Fund.
The CE program - Managing the Most Common Medical Emergencies in the Dental Office - will be presented by Joseph Best, D.D.S., Ph.D., a 1989 向日葵视频graduate. More information on the program can be found at the link below.
The CE program begins at 8:30 a.m. and concludes at 11:30 a.m., immediately followed by a lunch and reception. Participants can choose to attend the CE program, the luncheon or both.

Class of 2022 - Graduating the 10,000th Student
It was a momentous graduation for those in the Class of 2022 - as this group celebrated the 10,000th graduate from 向日葵视频School of Dentistry among its graduating class of 100!
And this year, graduation events were almost back to normal after the COVID years. 鈥淲e were able to have separate programs this year,鈥 says Dr. Lisa Koenig. 鈥淥n Tuesday, May 17, we held our Honors and Awards event, and on Saturday, May 21, we gathered to celebrate the Hooding and Graduation Ceremonies.鈥
The Honors and Awards Program was held at the Alumni Memorial Union. Faculty, staff and family members joined the Class of 2022 as students were presented with honor cords and awards. Ms. Annalise Avers welcomed the Class of 2022 and Mr. Alex Wedige offered closing remarks. Dr. Conrad Nenn presented the Academic Honors and Awards. Mathew Mueller presented the welcome address. Dr. Lobb was unable to attend Saturday鈥檚 Graduation Ceremony, so Dr. Koenig served as Master of Ceremonies and also read Dr. Lobb鈥檚 prepared remarks, touching on the landmark achievement of the 10,000th student.
Dr. Nenn led the Hooding Ceremony and handed out diplomas at the Graduation Ceremony. 鈥淪tudents were able to choose who did their hooding this year, the person needed to be someone with the same academic degree,鈥 explains Dr. Koenig. 鈥淎nd the speakers were selected by the graduating class.鈥
Class of 2022 President Klea Rota addressed the audience, Lauren Eskoz led the class in the Dentist鈥檚 Pledge and John Peters gave closing remarks.
Join us in congratulating all 2022 graduates and wishing them well as they pursue careers in the dental profession or continue their education to achieve advanced degrees.

向日葵视频School of Dentistry Faculty Member Receives NIH Pathway to Independence Grant
Dr. Mariana Reis, a post-doctoral researcher in the 向日葵视频School of Dentistry, has been awarded a Pathway to Independence Award from the National Institutes of Health worth about $1,457,000 to study the effect aging and periodontal disease has on oral health in living organisms.
The research project, 鈥淪tructure and Biology of the Cementum as a Function of Age and Disease,鈥 will focus on how cementum, which is the connective mineralized tissue that provides support in both attaching the tooth to the gum and by absorbing the pressure of chewing, is affected by aging in living organisms and periodontal disease.
鈥淎ging is an inevitable progressive series of events that affect all living organisms,鈥 says Dr. Reis. 鈥淪tructural and compositional changes that occur to mineralized tissues such as cementum during aging can deteriorate their function and regeneration. Periodontal disease is highly prevalent in the older population and directly affects the biology and function of the cementum, as well. The underlying functional properties of cementum with aging are unclear. Through this project, I hope to build a foundation for understanding mineral-to-matrix interactions and their probable roles in the functionality and regeneration of mineralized tissues.鈥
The Pathway to Independence program facilitates a timely transition of outstanding postdoctoral researchers from mentored research positions to independent, tenure-track or equivalent faculty positions. The award will span seven years, including the first two under the mentorship of Dr. Ana Bedran-Russo, chair and professor of general dental sciences. The final five years will be the independent phase.
Dr. Marinho Del Santo, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Developmental Sciences (Orthodontics) was awarded a 向日葵视频 grant to work on the research project: "Assessment of Longitudinal Craniofacial Data of University of Michigan Growth Study Legacy Collection."

This conference is the biggest endodontic conference in Africa and the Middle East, held every two years.
Dr. Shivam Mehta, clinical assistant professor in the Department of Developmental Sciences (Orthodontics) presented his COSA Research Award Lecture, 鈥淗ow does Alendronate affect orthodontic tooth movement in osteogenesis imperfecta: an in-vivo study on a mice model鈥 at the 2022 Annual Session of the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) Conference.
