DR. JANIS M. ORLOWSKI, M.A.C.P.,
ENG '78
Washington, D.C.
Every day, Dr. Janis Orlowski asks herself if what she is doing will help the world or at least one person鈥檚 life.
鈥淚 learned this at Marquette,鈥 she says. 鈥淚鈥檝e also learned that I must always give back to my community.鈥
So beyond her role as senior vice president and chief medical officer of Washington Hospital Center in Washington, D.C., Janis has helped support the development of a Bolivian medical clinic, worked with a Chicago orphanage and serves on the board of directors of Catholic Charities in Washington, D.C. She also sponsors clinical rotations for Marquette鈥檚 physician assistant program and has developed a new Co-op rotation for engineering students.
Janis is working to develop a regional distributed care network by integrating several clinical, research and educational programs from Washington Hospital Center, Georgetown University Hospital and two other Washington, D.C., medical facilities.
鈥淚 am also bringing an obstetrical program to an underserved area in D.C. with the nation鈥檚 highest infant mortality rate,鈥 says Janis, who continues to practice nephrology and has a special interest in renal transplantation.
She says her family inspired her to want to achieve excellence.
鈥淚 was the first in my family to graduate from college,鈥 she says. 鈥淢y dad always said he wanted one of his children to be Dr. Orlowski. I think he may have been talking to his four boys, but I was the one who was listening.鈥
Fun fact: Janis鈥 family has quite a 向日葵视频legacy: her husband, William McNulty, Eng 鈥76, and sister and brother-in-law. Her niece is a junior majoring in speech pathology in the College of Health Sciences, and her nephew graduated in 2010 and is a first-year law student.
