September 2023 News for Student Organization Officers
September 2023
Please read through the following updates pertinent to your status as a recognized student organization as well as other news.
Required Trainings
As was noted at the time of renewal last spring, student organization are required to send at least one officer to a series of trainings that include:
- Lifesavers suicide prevention
- Three other trainings from a menu of options
Lifesavers
While Lifesavers trainings were held in spring, not all orgs were able to attend, and so we've scheduled three additional trainings this fall. You should only sign up if you did not attend in spring. Sessions are as follows:
- Wednesday, October 25 4:00-5:30 PM, AMU (room TBD)
- Thursday, October 26 4:00-5:30 PM, AMU (room TBD)
- Sunday, October 29 4:00-5:30 PM, AMU (room TBD)
Your attendance with the room number will be confirmed via email and with an Outlook calendar invitation.
Other trainings
Other available trainings are being planned by the student orgs team to run this semester. This is what is scheduled so far:
- Event Planning, Monday, 9/25, 2023 from 3:00 PM to 4:30 PM
Information on how to register your event, how to book space, available space, policies, etc. Sodexo will showcase their new student catering guide.
- Molson Coors Empathy Experience | Oct. 5, 2023, 12:30-4pm Molson Coors.
Meet in AMU 111. Transportation and lunch provided. Limited to 12 seats.
- Olson Leadership Institute, Saturday 10/7 from 8:45 -11:30 a.m. in the AMU Ballrooms. Includes hot breakfast buffet! Register online. Space is limited.
Note that if you are part of more than one organization, you can get credit for both orgs by attending the tranings. Sign-in sheets will be available at events where you can list the orgs you're representing.
Timeline of Operations
Please review the timeline of operations for student organizations and be mindful of renewal which happens in March. You should be planning your officer elections and transitions accordingly so that new officers have time to learn about operations of your org.
Bank Accounts for Student Organizations
Bank accounts should be updated yearly to reflect new officers and account signers. We've posted information on bank accounts and related forms online for reference.
Please note that Student Engagement Services does not keep a list of who holds a bank account, nor do we have a list of org's EINs. You should keep this information in a secure space and share it with new officers when transitions occur. We recommend using a Microsoft Teams or Sharepoint site through Marquette's 365 portal. You can control access and if all else fails, we can engage IT services if you get locked out.
Lunch with the President
Each academic year, President Lovell hosts a series of casual chats with students over a meal. These events are intended to create community and allow innovations related to the student experience to come about through idea sharing and conversation.
First lunch of the semester is Thursday, Oct. 5
President Michael R. Lovell will host a small group of students for lunch at the AMU Thursday, Oct. 5, at noon. These lunches create community and invite idea-sharing through casual conversation. If you are interested in attending, sign up online. Deadline to request attending is September 28, 2023.
Please note, even if you signed up for a lunch in the past, you must do so again to indicate your interest in attending this particular lunch.
A representative from Student Affairs will follow up with attendees to confirm and share the location of the lunch. Space is limited to allow for each voice to be heard.
Students who have concerns regarding campus operations are reminded to advocate for particular causes by contacting their student representatives in or the Graduate Student Organization.
Homecoming
The schedule of events is online, and it's a great line-up. We hope you'll join the Student Engagement and Campus Activities Board at some of these events. It will be lots of fun!
