The raising of Lazarus shows the fullness of who Jesus in in his humanity and in his divinity. He shows deep compassion for Mary and Martha on the loss of their brother. And this grief touch his own heart and he weeps openly. He wants to do something. His prayer to his Father precedes the resuscitation of Lazarus. And when Lazarus comes from the tomb, Jesus commands those around to unbind him and set him free. He wanted Lazarus as he does us to have life and life to the fullest. This gospel story does point to the resurrection of Jesus but it points more to the person and the power of Jesus to bring life out of death.
John 11:3-7, 17, 20-27, 33b-45
The sisters of Lazarus sent word to Jesus, saying,
鈥淢aster, the one you love is ill.鈥
When Jesus heard this he said,
鈥淭his illness is not to end in death,
but is for the glory of God,
that the Son of God may be glorified through it.鈥
Now Jesus loved Martha and her sister and Lazarus.
So when he heard that he was ill,
he remained for two days in the place where he was.
Then after this he said to his disciples,
"Let us go back to Judea.鈥
When Jesus arrived, he found that Lazarus
had already been in the tomb for four days.
When Martha heard that Jesus was coming,
she went to meet him;
but Mary sat at home.
Martha said to Jesus,
鈥淟ord, if you had been here,
my brother would not have died.
But even now I know that whatever you ask of God,
God will give you.鈥
Jesus said to her,
鈥淵our brother will rise.鈥
Martha said,
鈥淚 know he will rise,
in the resurrection on the last day.鈥
Jesus told her,
鈥淚 am the resurrection and the life;
whoever believes in me, even if he dies, will live,
and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die.
Do you believe this?鈥
She said to him, 鈥淵es, Lord.
I have come to believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God,
the one who is coming into the world.鈥
He became perturbed and deeply troubled, and said,
鈥淲here have you laid him?鈥
They said to him, 鈥淪ir, come and see.鈥
And Jesus wept.
So the Jews said, 鈥淪ee how he loved him.鈥
But some of them said,
鈥淐ould not the one who opened the eyes of the blind man
have done something so that this man would not have died?鈥
So Jesus, perturbed again, came to the tomb.
It was a cave, and a stone lay across it.
Jesus said, 鈥淭ake away the stone.鈥
Martha, the dead man鈥檚 sister, said to him,
鈥淟ord, by now there will be a stench;
he has been dead for four days.鈥
Jesus said to her,
鈥淒id I not tell you that if you believe
you will see the glory of God?鈥
So they took away the stone.
And Jesus raised his eyes and said,
鈥淔ather, I thank you for hearing me.
I know that you always hear me;
but because of the crowd here I have said this,
that they may believe that you sent me.鈥
And when he had said this,
He cried out in a loud voice,
鈥淟azarus, come out!鈥
The dead man came out,
tied hand and foot with burial bands,
and his face was wrapped in a cloth.
So Jesus said to them,
鈥淯ntie him and let him go.鈥
Now many of the Jews who had come to Mary
and seen what he had done began to believe in him.
Reflection from the Preface of the Mass:
As a man like us, Jesus wept for Lazarus his friend. As eternal God, he raised Lazarus from the dead. In his love for us all, Christ gives us the sacraments to lift us up to everlasting life.
Suggestions for Reflection:
- 鈥淚 am the Resurrection and the life, whoever believes in me even if he dies, will live and everyone who lives and believes in me will never die. Do you believe this?鈥 This is the question posed to us by the Lord. How do I answer?
- 鈥淯nbind him and let him go free.鈥 What are those fears, attitudes, addictions form which we need the Lord to free us by raising us up?
- Do I believe that whatever seems dead in me鈥攎y faith, my perspective, my waning hope, my ability to love鈥攃an be brought back to life by the power of Jesus Christ at work in me?
