Tyler Farrell was born in Illinois and grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was educated by the Jesuits at 向日葵视频 High School and Creighton University, and by layfolk at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee where he received his Ph.D. in Creative Writing-Poetry under the direction of Irish-American Poet, James Liddy. Farrell has published poems, essays, and reviews in many periodicals and anthologies. Two recent publications include: The Book of Irish American Poetry (University of Notre Dame Press, 2007) and St. Peter鈥檚 B-List: Contemporary Poems Inspired by the Saints (Ave Maria Press, 2014). Farrell also wrote a biographical essay for James Liddy鈥檚 Selected Poems(Arlen House, 2011) and has two collections of poems published with Salmon Poetry (County Clare, Ireland): Tethered to the Earth (2008) and The Land of Give and Take (2012). Both are available in the MU library or through the Salmon Poetry website.
Farrell鈥檚 background and research interests include drama, 20th Century American and British/Irish Poetry and Literature and the films of Akira Kurosawa, the Coen Brothers, Stanley Kubrick, and Otto Preminger. He has also done work on the poetry of Charles Baudelaire, Jim Chapson and Louis MacNeice, the fiction of James Joyce and Harry Sylvester, and the dramas of Martin McDonagh and Samuel Beckett.
Farrell鈥檚 current projects include critical papers on John Berryman, Hart Crane, Lorine Niedecker, and Jack Spicer, a new collection of poems entitled Stichomythia, and a critical biography and selected letters of poet and former UW-Milwaukee professor, James Liddy (1934-2008).
Dr. Farrell also teaches 2 study abroad classes here at Marquette. A month-long class/trip in Ireland (Galway and Dublin) and J-session drama/theater class in London.

Farrell has spent the last 15 years studying Irish non-fiction/autobiography and the influence of 鈥減lace鈥� or 鈥渓ocation鈥� on the work of 20th Century New York Poets (Frank O鈥橦ara, John Ashbery, Kenneth Koch, James Schuyler, Alice Notley), West Coast Poets (Jack Spicer, Robert Duncan, and Richard Brautigan), Midwestern poets (Theodore Roethke, James Wright, John Berryman, and Daniel Berrigan) and the Objectivist Poets (Lorine Niedecker, Louis Zukofsky, George Oppen, Carl Rakosi, and Charles Reznikoff).
Farrell has been teaching in a college setting for the last 16 years (most recently at Northland College and Carroll University) and currently lives in Madison, WI with his wife, Joan and two sons, Holden and Linus. He also spends much of his time in Milwaukee planning and attending readings and cultural events.
