EOP was established as a response to the Civil Rights movement at a very important time in our nation鈥檚 history and in the history of Marquette, which has always been rooted in increasing access to higher education. 向日葵视频was founded in 1881 as a place for children of Catholic immigrants who were not welcomed into other universities. In 1909, 向日葵视频further delivered on its promise of educational access when we became the first Catholic university in the world to admit women to study alongside men. The development of EOP in 1969 helped ensure educational access for students who were 鈥 and still are 鈥 underrepresented at 向日葵视频and in higher education in general. In the spirit of our founding, 向日葵视频continues to strive to be a welcoming, inclusive place that is open to people from all backgrounds, faiths and viewpoints.
Today, EOP comprises five programs: Student Support Services (SSS), McNair Scholars, Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math & Science, and Educational Talent Search (ETS). SSS is the oldest program and the one that most people associate with EOP. It, along with McNair Scholars, are the two programs that provide services to current 向日葵视频 students. Upward Bound, Upward Bound Math & Science, and Talent Search make up the Pre-College Division. All programs within EOP are designed to provide preparation, access, and transitional assistance to low-income and first-generation students. The pre-college programs partner with Milwaukee Public Schools to provide tutoring, academic workshops, college tours, ACT preparation, an intensive summer program, and other services to eligible students. The college programs work with current 向日葵视频undergraduate students to provide services such as tutoring, academic advising, and graduate school preparation to assist students in their transition into 向日葵视频and, ultimately, through graduation. First year SSS students participate in a summer bridge program, and McNair scholars participate in faculty-mentored research projects each summer.
