Marina Walker Guevara

/communication/guest-speakers-2016-2017.pcf ImageOn September 19, the College of Communication, in collaboration with the O鈥橞rien Fellowship in Public Service Journalism, welcomed Marina Walker Guevara to campus. Ms. Walker Guevara delivered the Burleigh Media Ethics Lecture.

Walker Guevara is the journalist who co-directed the Pulitzer Prize-winning Panama Papers investigation across 230 global media outlets, leading to resignations and criminal investigations around the world based on leaked documents from a law firm representing celebrities and politicians.

 

Barbie Zelizer

Barbie ZelizerBarbie Zelizer, the Raymond Williams Professor of Communication and Director of the Scholars Program in Culture and Communication at the Annenberg School for Communication, delivered the Nieman Lecture on February 21. Drawing upon long-established understandings of ethics in journalism, Dr. Zelizer discussed their limitations in light of two connected moments in the current American public imagination: the presidential election of Trump in 2016 and the emergence of the #MeToo social media movement in 2017 that brought sexual harassment in the workplace to the forefront of public disclosure.

Bill Raftery

Bill RafteryThe Diederich College of Communication and MU Athletics welcomed Bill Raftery as the 2018 Pete and Bonnie Axthelm Memorial lecturer on April 23. Mr. Raftery, analyst for CBS Sports鈥 college basketball, will present this year鈥檚 lecture on April 23 in the Alumni Memorial Union from 4 鈥 5:30 p.m.

Raftery was inducted into the Sports Broadcasting Hall of Fame this past December. In May, 2017, he won his second Sports Emmy Award. With catch phrases like 鈥淥nions鈥 and 鈥淲ith a sweet kiss, off the glass鈥︹, Raftery has carved out a recognizable identity for himself as a sports broadcaster over his remarkable 36-year career.
