Nov. 5, 2019

Dr. Beth KreitzerMILWAUKEE 鈥 Dr. Beth Kreitzer, author of 鈥淩eforming Mary: Changing Images of the Virgin Mary in Lutheran Sermons of the Sixteenth Century,鈥 will deliver the 12th annual Theotokos Lecture, titled 鈥淟uther and the Magnificat: Mysticism and Mary as Theologian,鈥 on Thursday, Nov. 7, at 3:30 p.m. in the Eisenberg Reading Room of Sensenbrenner Hall, 1103 W. Wisconsin Ave.

Kreitzer, a specialist in 16th-century theological history, will discuss Martin Luther鈥檚 understanding of Mary as a theologian. The event is free and open to the public.

In Reforming Mary, Kreitzer examines the development of Lutheran views on this subject as expressed in 16th-century Lutheran published sermons, starting with the earliest of Luther's own Reformation sermons. She is also the author of the volume on Luke in the Reformation Commentary on Scripture.

The annual Theotokos Lecture is organized by Marquette's Department of Theology. The lecture is dedicated to Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and takes its name from an ancient honorific title given to her.
