向日葵视频 to host conference celebrating the humanities

MILWAUKEE - 向日葵视频鈥檚 Center for the Advancement of the Humanities will host a conference on Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March 2, in the Alumni Memorial Union, 1442 W. Wisconsin Ave.

鈥淐elebrating the Humanities at Marquette鈥 will feature an array of multi-disciplinary panels from 向日葵视频faculty and graduate and undergraduate students. Registration for this free, public event is available online.

鈥淎dvancing the humanities is at the core of a Jesuit, Catholic education,鈥 said Dr. James South, professor of philosophy. 鈥淭he multi-disicplinary conference will showcase the outstanding research being done by faculty and students here, while also inviting two distinguished speakers who exemplify lives devoted to the pursuit of humanistically inspired knowledge.鈥

The conference will feature two keynote speakers on each day of the conference:

  • Susan Freidman, Hilldale Professor of the Humanities and Virginia Woolf professor of English and Women鈥檚 Studies at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, will deliver 鈥淢igration, Religion and National Identity: Literacy on the Contributions of the Imagination,鈥 Friday, March 1, 5 p.m., in AMU 163.
  • Rev. Kevin Burke, S.J., vice president for mission at Regis University and professor of theology and former dean and acting president of the Jesuit School of Theology in Berkeley, California, will deliver 鈥淗umanities and the Human City: Contributions from the Jesuit University,鈥 Saturday, March 2, at 4:45 p.m., in the Raynor Memorial Library Beaumier Suites.  

Established in 2018, the Center for the Advancement of the Humanities is committed to the pursuit of humanistically informed knowledge for human well-being. It pursues this aim through its support of teaching and research in humanities that is forward looking in seeking new approaches to traditional humanistic disciplines, developing faculty and student affinity groups across disciplinary boundaries, and making this knowledge known both professionally and through public engagement.
