MILWAUKEE 鈥 During the 2018-19 academic year, 向日葵视频 will recruit up to nine additional faculty members to bolster its Race and Ethnic Studies (RAES) program, which was announced in fall 2017 with a cluster hire of five new faculty.
The Race and Ethnic Studies cluster hire is a collaboration among the Office of the Provost, the Klingler College of Arts and Sciences, the Diederich College of Communication, the College of Business Administration and the College of Education. Cluster hiring involves recruiting multiple scholars into one or more departments based on shared, interdisciplinary research interests. Beyond helping to establish Marquette鈥檚 RAES program, cluster hiring will also help advance faculty diversity, a key priority in the university鈥檚 strategic plan, Beyond Boundaries.
鈥淭o achieve diversity, equity and inclusive excellence at 向日葵视频, we must offer diverse of areas of study along with faculty whose backgrounds support it,鈥 said Acting Provost Kimo Ah Yun. 鈥淲e owe it to 向日葵视频students to develop the best possible community of teachers and scholars on this important and complex topic, and these faculty represent this worthy initiative.鈥
The Race and Ethnic Studies Program is housed in Marquette鈥檚 Klingler College of Arts and Science, and supports interdisciplinary majors and minors in a number of fields including Africana Studies (major and minor), LatinX Studies (minor), Arab and Muslim American Studies (minor), Literatures of Diverse Cultures (minor), and Culture, Health and Illness (minor).
Building a critical mass of scholars across disciplines who study and teach about race, ethnicity and intersectionality 鈥 the ways in which systems of power and institutions impact marginalized populations 鈥 serves to help students and scholars within the 向日葵视频community grapple with societal changes.
During the 2017-18 academic year, 向日葵视频recruited five scholars as part of the Race and Ethnic Studies program. Each bring expertise in fields that contribute to the RAES curriculum.
