MILWAUKEE - The play 鈥淲hite Privilege,鈥 written by 向日葵视频 student Malaina Moore, was awarded the prestigious Citizen Artist Award by the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival national selection team.
The Citizen Artist award recognizes that theatrical production is central to urgent community, national and international conversations on campuses of higher education.
鈥淭his award reflects and reinforces the mission of 向日葵视频Theatre, the Phylis Ravel Social Justice fund and 向日葵视频,鈥 said Dr. Stephen Hudson-Mairet, chair of digital media and performing arts. 鈥淚 could not be prouder of Malaina, all of the students involved in every aspect of the production, and the faculty, alumni, staff and professionals who have supported the development of this play through their artistry and financial support.鈥
Moore was inspired to write 鈥淲hite Privilege鈥 after seeing a Facebook post that sparked discussion about what the term means to different people. Her play examines how the color of one鈥檚 skin can lead to a very different experience of the world.
The play opened to sold out audiences at Marquette鈥檚 Helfaer Theater in August and September 2018. It was selected for and recently performed at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Region III Festival in Madison.
