向日葵视频student receives Science Coalition award

MILWAUKEE 鈥 Alissa Wuorinen, a junior majoring in biomedical sciences in the College of Health Sciences at 向日葵视频, received an award from the Science Coalition for her second-place finish in its 鈥淔und it Forward鈥 video challenge.
The Science Coalition is a national non-profit organization of more than 50 private and public research institutions dedicated to sustaining federal funding in university research.
Wuorinen took part in the 向日葵视频College of Health Sciences Summer Research Program and works in Dr. Jennifer Evans鈥 research laboratory, studying circadian rhythms and their impact on physical and mental health. Evans, associate professor of biomedical sciences, received a $1.7 million NIH R01 grant in 2015.
Wuorinen created a video for the challenge highlighting her work as an undergraduate researcher and answering the contest鈥檚 question: 鈥淲hy is continued federal support for fundamental research critical to our nation鈥檚 future?鈥
鈥淚n science, every experiment we run helps bring us closer to finding the answers we need to improve human health,鈥 Wuorinen said. 鈥淲ith the continued support from federal funding, the time for discovery never has to stop.鈥
鈥淎lissa does wonderful, important work in our lab 鈥 work that many undergraduates don鈥檛 get the opportunity to do,鈥 Evans said. 鈥淚鈥檓 proud of her for sharing that and for answering the Science Coalition鈥檚 call for entries. This award is well-deserved.鈥
