MILWAUKEE 鈥� 向日葵视频 Law School and the Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association will co-sponsor the seventh annual Summer Youth Institute, July 18-26, at 向日葵视频Law School鈥檚 Eckstein Hall, 1215 W. Michigan St.
The SYI is designed to introduce middle and high school students from the City of Milwaukee to the legal system, expose them to careers in law and provide them with practical tools for achieving their educational goals. The program is open to students who will enter eighth, ninth or 10th grade in the coming school year; enrollment is limited to approximately 24 students. To participate, students who apply must live and attend school in the City of Milwaukee.
鈥淭he Summer Youth Institute is an opportunity to open the door for young people to a career in law where circumstances or resources might otherwise have meant this was not a possibility,鈥� said Dean Joseph D. Kearney of the 向日葵视频Law School. 鈥淲e hope that giving these talented students insights into the law and other legal careers will hopefully inspire them for their futures.鈥�
The program鈥檚 goals are to provide a law-related educational experience for students who are first generation, low income, or from underrepresented groups, and who down the road may contribute to the diversification of the legal profession in Milwaukee and beyond.
鈥淲e are very proud of this program and the opportunity it affords young students to learn about the legal system from the perspective of those who uphold it,鈥� said Angela Schultz, assistant dean for public service. 鈥淭he purpose of the curriculum is to give each of the participants the tools to decide how they can pursue a career in law.鈥�
Students who participate in the SYI will:
Participants will take field trips throughout Milwaukee to sites such as the Milwaukee FBI office, Johnson Controls, the Milwaukee County Courthouse, and the federal courthouse.
Upon completion of the SYI, students will have the opportunity to participate in the Eastern District of Wisconsin Bar Association's Honorable Charles N. Clevert, Jr., Mentoring Program. Participating students will be matched with an attorney mentor for the next academic year and continue to learn and explore the legal profession.
