Notre Dame theologian to discuss Mary at Marquette's Theotokos Lecture
October 10, 2018
MILWAUKEE — Dr. Ann Astell, professor of theology at the University of Notre Dame, will discuss "Mary at the Cross: A New Person for a New Community" at the 11th annual Theotokos Lecture on Tuesday, Oct. 16, at 3:30 p.m. in the Raynor Libraries Beaumier Suite.
The event is free and open to the public.
Astell researches theology, spirituality and literature. Drawing on the resources of personalist thought, the lecture envisions Mary as the "new person" whose unbroken faith in her Son's divinity becomes the shared faith of the Church as a "new community" of believers.
Astell received her master's degree from Marquette. She has a bachelor's degree and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin — Madison.
The annual Theotokos Lecture is organized by Marquette's Department of Theology. The lecture is dedicated to Mary, the Mother of Jesus, and takes its name from an ancient honorific title given to her.
