Journalist Dave Zirin to discuss race and social activism in sports at Marquette, Nov. 8

MILWAUKEE — Dave Zirin, sports editor for The Nation, will be the featured speaker in a conversation about race/racism, sports and social activism on Nov. 8 at 7:30 p.m. at ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵ's Alumni Memorial Union, Room 157, 1442 W. Wisconsin Ave.
Zirin is the author of eight books on the politics of sports. A frequent guest on ESPN and MSNBC, Zirin was nominated for an NAACP Image Award for his book, The John Carlos Story: The Sports Moment that Changed the World.
His latest book is co-authored with NFL defensive end Michael Bennett, Things that Make White People Uncomfortable.
After Zirin's speech, local journalist James Causey will join him for a conversation among journalists, moderated by Pulitzer Prize winner Dave Umhoefer, director of Marquette's O'Brien Fellowship in Public Service Journalism.
"This event will engage a critical dialogue about one of the most significant protests in professional sports history," said Dr. Robert Smith, the director of the Center for Urban Research, Teaching and Outreach. "The evening will also remind us of the vital role of the press and free speech as our democracy indeed faces troubled times."
The event is co-sponsored by Marquette's Center for Urban Research, Teaching and Outreach, the Department of Journalism and Media Studies, Diedrich College of Communication, and ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵForum.
