MPS Superintendent Driver goes 'On the Issues' at ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵLaw School
February 28, 2017
MILWAUKEE — Milwaukee Public Schools Superintendent Darienne Driver will be the featured guest in an upcoming "On the Issues with Mike Gousha," Wednesday, March 8, from 12:15 to 1:15 p.m. at ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵ Law School's Eckstein Hall, 1215 W. Michigan St.
Since becoming MPS Superintendent in 2014, Driver has earned positive reviews from community and business leaders for her efforts to improve the state's largest school district. But with a four-year graduation rate of 58 percent and state exams showing that only about 20 percent of district students read proficiently, Driver acknowledges that much more needs to be done.
Late last year, she unveiled plans for a series of major reforms. They include an earlier start to the school year, school uniforms in most schools and more principal coaching and potential staff changes in MPS's lowest-performing schools. They also call for MPS to be the sole chartering authority in the city. Driver will discuss the district's successes and struggles, and her latest plans for reform.
Gousha, an award-winning broadcast journalist, is the Law School's distinguished fellow in law and public policy. His "On the Issues" series of conversations with newsmakers supports ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵLaw School's commitment to serve as a modern-day public square for the city of Milwaukee, the state of Wisconsin and beyond.
Through public programming such as the ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵLaw School Poll, debates featuring candidates in significant political races, Gousha's "On the Issues" conversations with newsmakers, public lectures by leading scholars and conferences on significant issues of public importance, the Law School serves as the region's leading venue for serious civil discourse about law and public policy matters.
The event is at capacity for members of the public. Registration for a waiting list . Members of the media who are interested in attending should contact Chris Jenkins in the Office of Marketing and Communication.
