ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵwelcomes final class to live in McCormick Hall

MILWAUKEE — On Thursday, Aug. 24, more than 2,000 freshmen from 40 states, 27 countries and two U.S. territories will move into residence halls on the ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵ campus and begin to call Milwaukee home.

This academic year marks the last class that will live in McCormick Hall. The residence hall, which opened in 1968, has housed more than 36,000 students. Next year, new students will move into the Robert A. Wild, S.J. Commons, the new residence hall being built on 17th and Wells Streets.

During orientation, students will participate in a number of organized activities on campus and throughout Milwaukee. Classes will begin on Monday, Aug. 28.

Thursday, Aug. 24

The residence hall move-in takes place from 8:30 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. The best photo opportunity is at McCormick Hall on the corner of 16th Street and Wisconsin Avenue. Access to rooms in McCormick Hall can be provided by Office of Marketing and Communication staff. Students will also be moving into Cobeen (729 N. 11th St.), O'Donnell (725 N. 18th St.) and Abbottsford (722 N. 11th St.) halls.

Stand-up interviews with university leadership will be available:

Chris Jenkins, associate director of university communication, at 6:30 a.m.

Topics include: class demographics and statistics; general university information.

Rev. Andy Thon, S.J., clinical associate professor of educational policy and leadership, at 10 a.m.

Father Thon, served as McCormick Hall's longest-running live-in chaplain for 18 years, beginning in 1990. He served as vice president for student affairs from 1997 to 2008, lived with 22 resident assistants and 750 students annually. His first year living in McCormick Hall was also the hall's co-ed debut.

ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵPresident Michael R. Lovell, at 10:45 a.m.

  • President Lovell will be handing out keys to new residents and visiting students in their new rooms.
  • Matt Lovell, President Lovell's son, will be a freshman and member of the last class to live in McCormick Hall. Matt is moving in at 11:15 a.m.

Monday, Aug. 28

The all-university Mass of the Holy Spirit will bring together the entire campus community for the first time this academic year at 6 p.m. at the Church of the Gesu, 1145 W. Wisconsin Ave.
