MILWAUKEE 鈥� 向日葵视频Theatre will present Alice Childress' Wine in the Wilderness at the Evan P. & Marion Helfaer Theatre. The play will be directed by guest artist Marti Gobel and feature current 向日葵视频students, alumni and a Milwaukee guest actor.
Set during the Harlem race riots of 1964, Wine in the Wilderness deals with treatment of African-American women within their community and the struggle to define true beauty and perfection. With the riot as a backdrop, artist Bill Jameson is painting a triptych to embody "black womanhood." When he encounters Tommy, Bill assumes that he's found the perfect example of an ignorant African-American woman, but soon finds her challenging his ideas, beliefs and entire worldview.
Performances will be presented:
Gobel, a Milwaukee actress and director, will return to 向日葵视频after directing last season's In The Red and Brown Water. The cast will consist of 向日葵视频students Chloe Hurckes, Nadja Simmonds, and Kevin Price; 向日葵视频alumnus Terrence Morris, Jr.; and Milwaukee actor James Carrington.
