Howard Kainz studied Greek, Latin, and Philosophy at the University of California and at Loyola University, Los Angeles (BA). After an MA in the History of Philosophy at St. Louis University, he finished his PhD at Duquesne University, specializing in 19th Century German Philosophy. He was an Assistant Professor at Duquesne, then subsequently at Marquette, where he became full professor in 1981, and professor emeritus in 2002.

Professor Kainz was awarded a National Endowment for the Humanities Fellowship for research in 1977-78, and two Fulbright Fellowships for study in Germany, 1981-82 and 1987-88.
