The 2017 Aquinas Lecture, Identity, Authenticity, and Humility was delivered by Daniel O. Dahlstrom, the John R. Silber Professor of Philosophy at Boston University. Dr. Dahlstrom served as Chair of the Boston University Department of Philosophy from 2007 to 2011.

Dr. Dahlstrom received his Ph.D. from St. Louis University in 1978. Before moving to Boston University he was a member of the School of Philosophy of e Catholic University of America from 1979 to 1996. Midway between research as a Fulbright scholar at Tübingen (1974-75) and Bonn (1983-84) respectively, Dr. Dahlstrom received a grant from the Mellon Foundation for research on medieval logic at the Vatican Microfilm Library (1978). In 1986 a Humboldt award facilitated study of the theoretical works of Kant and Hegel at Cologne, and the Thyssen Foundation supported research on Heidegger in Freiburg in 2005 and 2013. He has also been a Visiting Professor at the Catholic University of Leuven and the University of Luxembourg.

In addition to producing translations of major works by Moses Mendelssohn, Friedrich Schiller, G. W. F. Hegel, Ludwig Feuerbach, Edmund Husserl, and Martin Heidegger, Dr. Dahlstrom has edited eighteen collections of essays, including Interpreting Heidegger in 2011. His books include Das logische Vorurteil (Passagen, 1994), Heidegger’s Concept of Truth (Cambridge, 2001), Philosophical Legacies (CUA press, 2008), and The Heidegger Dictionary (Bloomsbury, 2013).

Numerous articles have appeared in such journals as Review of Metaphysics, Research in Phenomenology, Kant-Studien, New Yearbook for Phenomenology and Phenomenological Philosophy, Reason Papers, Philosophical Forum, Idealistic Studies, Mind, The Thomist, Modern Schoolman, Techne, Philosophisches Jahrbuch, Jahrbuch für Recht und Ethik, and British Journal of the History of Philosophy. As a speaker, he has been much in demand, presenting numerous invited papers and keynote addresses at national and international conferences.

In addition to serving as president of both the Metaphysical Society of America and the American Catholic Philosophical Association, Dr. Dahlstrom was the first presiding officer of the Heidegger Circle of North America and, from 2010 to 2014, the first editor of its annual journal, Gatherings. He has directed over thirty doctoral dissertations and served as a reader on over forty dissertations, in his home department as well as in other departments, world-wide.
