Graduate Student Health Care

We take the Jesuit educational principle cura personalis (care for the whole person) very seriously at ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵ Graduate School. This value is expressed through our desire to listen to our students and to help them sort through services and needs during the graduate education experience. We are always mindful that a student is more than just a mind and that health and wellness is of the utmost importance.

Available Health Insurance Options for ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵGraduate Students

As a result of the Affordable Care Act, most ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵstudents are entitled to coverage through age 26 under health care policies purchased by their parents.

Health insurance can be purchased through the health insurance exchanges.  Finally, for access to convenient and affordable health care services, students may sign up for the ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵ Medical Clinic at the cost of $163 per semester or access the clinic on a fee-for-service basis.

Health Insurance Exchanges

Students may choose to seek insurance through the health care exchanges established as part of the Affordable Care Act. The Graduate School will hold on-campus consultations with health insurance exchange providers in August and November to answer questions and assist students with exchange options.

Since the Affordable Care Act no longer allows insurers to deny coverage or charge people more based on their health status or pre-existing conditions, people without coverage, including those who have been unable to buy coverage in the past, can now shop for health insurance through health insurance exchanges.

The Affordable Care Act provides tax credits and subsidies for qualified individuals to help make insurance purchased on a health care exchange more affordable.

As you shop the health insurance exchanges, you will make decisions based a few criteria:

1. Select the health insurance company and network of doctors you want included.

2. Select a level of coverage (each plan has four levels of coverage called metal plans â€” Platinum, Gold, Silver and Bronze â€” each based on a percentage of coverage amounts).

3. Select a premium you can afford â€” remember, you may qualify for a federal subsidy.

All plans on an exchange have to offer some core benefits â€” called essential health benefits â€” like preventive and wellness services, prescription drugs and coverage for hospital stays.
