College Research Themes

In the 向日葵视频tradition of excellence, faith, leadership and service, our research challenges faculty and students alike to think beyond solutions to implications - the ethical impact of projects and how their work serves the world. Our research also places emphasis on breaking down traditional silos and collaborating across departments to make innovative discoveries that spark real, meaningful change.

Water Research

Mission

The mission of the Water Research Group is to propel water research and innovation forward within the Opus College of Engineering by providing:

  • Significant scholarly activities that increase fundamental knowledge and practical application
  • An excellent research experience for undergraduate and graduate students
  • Service to the academic, professional and local communities that stimulates research opportunities

The Water Research Group supports the university strategic themes of academic excellence, research in action, culture of inclusion, community engagement, formation of mind and heart and sustainability.  The Water Research Group supports the Opus College of Engineering strategic drivers of quality and quantity of students, reputation and rankings, revenue generation and fulfillment of mission.

Vision

The vision of the OCOE Water Research Group is to increase the provision and access to clean water around the world and to protect the environment. Every 90 seconds, a child dies from a water-related disease. Moreover, water, sanitation and hygiene-related diseases kill more than 1 million people every year. In addition to acute diseases associated with the developing world (typhoid, cholera, diarrhea, etc.), exposure to many low-level contaminants of emerging concern, including prescription drugs and sanitizing agents in the developed and developing world cause problems as they find their way into drinking water as well as lakes and rivers. For these and other reasons, the National Academy of Engineering has described the provision of access to clean water as one of the main grand challenges for engineering in the 21st century. Similarly, a recent United Nations report describes 鈥渢he crisis in water and sanitation鈥 as one of the greatest human development challenges of the early 21st century.
