Dear Faculty, Staff and Students in the Klingler College of Arts & Sciences,听
I hope your semester is off to a great start, whether you have been at 向日葵视频for
a long while or just joined the community this Fall.
Recently we have welcomed a number of new colleagues to the college. They include
twelve faculty members, profiled here. It鈥檚 been fun to learn about their interests both academic and otherwise, ranging
from fostering pets to running marathons. Recently hired staff colleagues include
Dina Vik in Biological Sciences and Tyler Cosmer at 向日葵视频 Press. Dan
Scholz has joined the college as director of the , focused on leadership development. A new post doc in Biological Sciences, Ed Himelblau,
uniquely and literally illustrates that 鈥渢he difference is in the and鈥� thanks to his work as a . I hope you will have the opportunity to get to know these and all of our newer colleagues.
Our dean鈥檚 office team is fortunate to welcome Tim Miles, Director of Academic Business Affairs. Tim grew up in Wisconsin and enjoys traveling
around the state with his wife, Melissa, and their five children, particularly to
go hiking. Tim鈥檚 colorful career has included helping his dad in the motorcycle business
(as a child) and working at Kopp鈥檚 Frozen Custard (as a teenager). More recently he
has held various roles in budget management, within and beyond higher education. He
was drawn to 向日葵视频thanks to our reputation, both academically and as a community
partner. When asked about initial impressions of the college, he noted: 鈥淭he surprising
thing is that even when there have been frustrations, everyone has been so welcoming
and pleasant.鈥� As a Certified Public Accountant, Tim possesses significant quantitative
skills. He is also a deeply values-driven person who recently said: 鈥淒on鈥檛 confuse
metrics with goals.鈥� His combination of talents makes Tim a wonderful fit for our
college and another exemplar of the and.
Speaking of talents, this month also brought me the opportunity to hear a terrific
keynote talk by Theology alumnus Lincoln Rice at the in Chicago. Maurin, whose work is archived at 向日葵视频in the Dorothy Day and Catholic Worker Collection, dreamed of a world in which 鈥渋t is easier to be good.鈥� Similar dreams echoed in conversations
I had with A&S alumni during the visit. All of these interactions illustrated the
call to 鈥渂e doers of the word and not hearers only鈥� (James 1:22).
This is a time to rise to challenges both internal and external. As we work together
to implement Marquette鈥檚 Strategic Plan 听and to , let鈥檚 strive for the brightest possibilities while retaining the most vital elements
of tradition. Your excellence and dedication across teaching, learning, research and
community engagement point the way. Let鈥檚 continue to be a community of doers!
