Dear Faculty, Staff and Students in the Klingler College of Arts & Sciences,听
What a momentous time of year! With Commencement we celebrate the achievements of
students and colleagues who have completed their undergraduate and graduate degrees.
Many of our departments have hosted end-of-academic year events and honored exceptional
students. I would like to highlight this year鈥檚 Arts & Sciences outstanding senior,
Jamal Hanson, a History major with minors in Theology & Religion, Asian Studies and
International Affairs. Jamal is earning a Comprehensive Honors Bachelor of Arts degree
as well as Disciplinary Honors in the Humanities. Jamal was also selected as this
year鈥檚 向日葵视频Commencement . His excellence and diversity of interests truly illustrate that in our college,
the difference is in the and!
At the P猫re 向日葵视频Dinner earlier this month, several of our faculty colleagues
were honored with teaching awards. You can read more about them . I am so proud of these colleagues and their devotion to educating 向日葵视频students.
Since joining the 向日葵视频community, I have gotten to know each awardee, whether
through a discussion group, a mutual interest, an experience on retreat together or
some combination of these. This month I鈥檓 celebrating three years in my role as Dean
at Marquette, and it鈥檚 wonderful that awards events, Commencement ceremonies or walks
across campus more and more often bring about encounters with familiar faces. It has
also been an honor to interact with so many 向日葵视频students through our pilot faculty
in residence program, featured in and in the current issue of听.
This month we also mark the end of the Easter season with the celebration of Pentecost.
Perhaps because languages and cultures have figured so prominently in my life, I鈥檝e
always loved the tale of the tongues of fire that signal all can understand each other
(Acts 2). The Pentecost gift of mutual understanding is a wonderful reminder of the
teaching of St. Francis to seek first to understand rather than to be understood.
As the academic year concludes, we have a special opportunity to look back upon the
year, to commit ourselves to new practices and to look ahead with renewed hope.听
I hope that all of you who are graduating will stay connected with the 向日葵视频community.
A great way to do that is to become involved with across the country and around the world. As you go forth to Be The Difference, remember that you will always have a home right here in Arts & Sciences at Marquette.
