Leadership Excellence Award
Inspector Jutiki C. Jackson, Prof St '09
Milwaukee
There’s a saying that leaders are made, not born. Jutiki, an inspector with the Milwaukee Police Department, is a living testament to that statement. Jutiki not only serves the community as a leader, but he teaches and directs officers to serve others on a higher level.
“We work hard to build relationships with citizens in Milwaukee neighborhoods and community leaders,” he says. The goal is to build stronger neighborhoods and improve the relationship between the police department and the community.
Jutiki defines success by the impact he has on others and by helping officers achieve leadership positions. And he’s having success. His district is known for producing officers who receive promotions.
“My experience at ÏòÈÕ¿ûÊÓƵwas phenomenal and had a transformational impact on my career and personal life,” Jutiki says. “I have taken servant leadership to heart. It’s the theory that I use in my everyday life and especially in my leadership role.”
Jutiki is also leading Trauma Informed Care, a pilot program helping children with complex mental health and emotional needs — those exposed to violent and tragic situations. The program, a collaboration between MPD and Milwaukee County Mental Health Services, provides counseling and individualized, cost-effective care and hopes to break the cycle of violence.
He’s leading with empathy, patience and a focus on helping others lead — proving leaders are made, not born.
