International graduate teaching assistants who will be teaching undergraduate students in the classroom are required to participate in the International Teaching Assistant Program (ITAP) on August 12 to 15, 2024 on Marquette's campus. International Teaching Assistants will receive an initial email from the program coordinator in mid July and another email with detailed instructions the week prior to the start of the program.
In addition, all graduate teaching and research assistants are required to participate in the Office of International Education's International Student Orientation prior to the start of the semester, regardless of ITAP attendance.
ITAP is a four-day intensive preparation program held two weeks prior to the start of the fall semester. The program provides workshops designed to introduce and review the skills needed to successfully interact with U.S. undergraduate students. The topics covered include U.S. university culture, teacher/student roles, presentation skills, classroom management and culture shock.
During the program, international TAs deliver a micro-teaching demonstration, which evaluates their English and presentation skills. Students receive the micro-teaching results and feedback at the end of ITAP.

As a graduate teaching or research assistant, you may also need to attend additional department specific orientations. Contact your academic department or the Graduate School to find out more information. These orientations may affect your arrival plans, so be sure to find out your complete schedule prior to making travel arrangements.
