History: The Jesuits (a.k.a. Society of Jesus), founded by St. Ignatius of Loyola in Spain, 1540, self-identify with the post-nominal initials, 鈥淪.J.鈥� The British/ English Jesuit Province made its first North American foundation, 1633. It administered the Maryland Mission, 1633-1773 (Jesuits suppressed), which evangelized Piscataway Indians in the Chesapeake Bay and Potomac River areas of Maryland and Virginia. Later, the Jesuits expanded and included peoples in New York and Pennsylvania.
