History: St. John the Baptist Church has been a predominantly non-Native American parish administered by Portland archdiocesan priests who attended to Native American students at the Chemawa Government Indian School (e.g. Chinook, Klamath, Grand Ronde, Paiute), Salem, and St. Michael Archangel Chapel (e.g. Paiute, Walla Walla, Wasco, Siletz), Salem, 1935-1937 (transferred to St. Joseph鈥檚, Salem).
