History: The Benedictines self-identify with the post-nominal initials, "O.S.B." They founded Assumption Monastery, 1893, which was elevated to an abbey, 1903. Assumption Abbey administered the following Native American (Arikara, Hidatsa, Mandan) missions on the Fort Berthold Reservation, North Dakota.

Description: Contains the "Rev. Julius M. Belleau Collection," which includes records assembled by Rev. Belleau while pastor of Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary Church, Pembina, North Dakota, 1934-1947. The majority of the records are typescripts of correspondence (most in French) of French-Canadian missionaries in the Red River Valley among the M茅tis and Ojibwa Indians. The typescripts are arranged chronologically, and the majority are preceded by a table of contents and Reverend Belleau's summary in English of each letter. Major correspondents include Rev. Severe Joseph Nicholas Dumoulin, Rev. Joseph Norbert Provencher, Rev. Georges Antoine Belcourt, Rev. Joseph Goiffon, Rev. J. Lafleche, Rev. Lawrence Simonet, and Rev. Jean Baptiste M. Genin, O.M.I., Bishop Joseph-Octave Plessis, Bishop Alexander-Antonine Tach茅, O.M.I., and Joseph Rolette. In addition to the correspondence, the collection includes a baptismal register for Assumption Mission, Pembina, 1858-1862, created by Rev. Joseph Goiffon; historical notes by Rev. Julius Belleau; and biographies of Rev. Joseph Goiffon and Rev. Georges Belcourt. Rev. Belleau copied these records from the Archives of the Archidioc猫se de Qu茅bec (Quebec, Quebec, Canada) and the Archives of the Archidioc猫se de Sainte Boniface (Sainte Boniface, Manitoba, Canada) and then donated the collection to Assumption Abbey in 1956.

Description: "Major James McLaughlin Papers," which include approximately 300 letters pertaining to Catholic Indian missions and schools, written primarily while McLaughlin was agent of the Fort Totten and Standing Rock reservations. Major correspondents include Bishop Martin Marty, O.S.B., Rev. John Baptist A. Brouillet, Director of the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions, Rev. Joseph A. Stephan, Indian Agent and later Director of the Bureau of Catholic Indian Missions, Rev. Rev. Martin Kenel, O.S.B., Rev. Claude Ebner, O.S.B., Rev. Francis M. Craft, Rev. Louis Bonin, and Sister Clapin, S.G.N.
