History: St. Eloi Church, Theriot, Terrebonne Parish, Louisiana, has been a predominantly non-Native American parish with some Native American (e.g. Chitamacha, Choctaw, Houma) parishioners in the Diocese of Houma-Thibodaux (Archives: Thibodaux, Louisiana).

Before 1875

Chitamacha, Choctaw, and Houma Indians intermarried and settled in Terrebonne Parish, including Bayou du Large

New Orleans archdiocesan priests at St. Francis de Sales, Houma, founded and attended St. Eloi [Eligius] Mission, Theriot/ Bayou du Large
