History: St. Ignatius of Loyola founded the Jesuits (a.k.a. Society of Jesus) in France, 1534. Under duress from European powers, Pope Clement XIV suppressed the Jesuits, 1773, and Pope Pius VII restored them, 1814. The Jesuits have administered the following provinces that have had Native American missions and parishes in the present-day United States.
