History: The Diocese of Vincennes was erected, 1834, for territory in Indiana and parts of Illinois from territory in the Diocese of Bardstown, Kentucky. It was renamed the Diocese of Indianapolis, 1898, and elevated to the Archdiocese of Indianapolis, 1944. Indianapolis and its predecessors served Native Americans through the following missions in Indiana:
