History: Founded in the Netherlands, 1855, the Sisters of St. Francis of Penance and Christian Charity self-identify with the post-nominal initials, 鈥淥.S.F.鈥 They made their first North American foundation by 1886, organized as their North American Province, 1928, and subdivided into three North American provinces, 1939, with Holy Name (Stella Niagara, New York) for the eastern United States, Sacred Heart (Denver, Colorado) for the Midwest United States, and St. Francis (Redwood City, California) for the western United States. Since 1939, the sisters of the Sacred Heart Province staffed or assisted in the following missions, schools, and ministries among Native Americans in South Dakota.
