History: The Archdiocese of Westminster, England, was erected as the Vicariate Apostolate of England and Wales, 1622. It was succeeded by the Vicariate Apostolate of London District, 1688, and renamed and elevated as the Archdiocese of Westminster, 1850. Westminster鈥檚 predecessors administered the following Native American missions in the present-day United States.

Jesuit missions (British Province) (Archives: London, England), Chesapeake Bay-Potomac River area (e.g. Piscataway), Maryland-Virginia

1640-present (Westminster, 1640-1784)

St. Mary Church (Piscataway, in part), Clinton/ Piscataway, Maryland

Jesuit missions, New York-Pennsylvania (e.g. Delaware)

 

Holding of Catholic records about Native Americans in the United States: Unknown. However, pertinent information may be contained in the correspondence of Bishop Richard Smith, 1624-1632, Bishop John Leyburn, 1685-1702, Bishop Bonaventure Giffard, 1703-1734, and Bishop Benjamin Petre, O.S.B. [Benedictines], 1734-1758.
