History: In 1820, the Diocese of Charleston was erected from territory in the Archdiocese of Baltimore for South Carolina and adjacent states. By 1868, it lost its out-of-state territory, which was used to erect more dioceses. In the 1970s, Charleston established a diocesan Native American Ministry while Adrian Dominican Sisters (Archives: Adrian, Michigan), based in two parishes, attended Native American stations in nearby counties:
