History: The Diocese of Jackson was erected as the Diocese of Natchez from territory in the Vicariate Apostolate of Louisiana and the Two Floridas, 1837. Prior to ca. 1800, Capuchins, Jesuits, and secular priests had evangelized Native Americans with missions at Biloxi, Natchez, and Yazoo, Mississippi. It has served Holy Rosary Indian Mission (Choctaw), Philadelphia/ Tucker, 1884-present.
