History: Mobile was erected as the Vicariate Apostolate of Alabama and the Floridas with territory from the Diocese of Louisiana and the Two Floridas (Saint Louis of New Orleans), 1825. It was erected as the Diocese of Mobile, 1829; renamed the Diocese of Mobile-Birmingham, 1954; split into the dioceses of Mobile and Birmingham, 1969; and elevated to the Archdiocese of Mobile, 1980. It lost territory as out-of-state dioceses were erected, 1850-1975. Within the present-day archdiocese, Dominicans, Capuchins, Carmelites, Jesuits (Lyon Province, Lyon, France), and the Seminary of Foreign Missions (Paris, France and Qu茅bec, Canada) evangelized Apalachee, Choctaw, and Tunica Indians, 1540-ca. 1763.
