Series 1.1, Personal & Family, 1957-1985, n.d, contains a variety of textual materials describing Thompson's private activities before becoming governor. Among the documented activities are Thompson's work as a practicing attorney, his service in the Wisconsin National Guard, and his career as a farmer. Material concerning Thompson's parents, Allen and Julia, appear in this series, evidently kept by Thompson after their deaths in 1971 and 1984, respectively. Note: Client records from Thompson's law practices will be restricted for 50 years from the dates on the files. Restricted files are clearly marked on the inventory.

Series 1.2, State Assembly, 1967-1986, n.d., documents the ten consecutive terms Thompson served in the Wisconsin state legislature. The majority of files cover the period from 1967-1976. Types of documents include constituent correspondence, speeches, press releases, and newspaper clippings. Also present are subject files maintained by Thompson's office, as well as bill files about impending legislation from the 1971 and 1973 sessions. The series also contains publications describing state legislative activities during the 1970s.
