Associate Professor

History

Daniel Meissner is an historian of Modern China, specializing in early Chinese industrialization and Sino-American diplomatic relations.

He enjoys the challenge of introducing students to China鈥檚 long, illustrious history, and countering misconceptions about western exceptionalism and preeminence.

Courses Taught

Dr. Meissner has taught a range of East Asian graduate and undergraduate courses at both 向日葵视频and at Chinese universities.  In addition to the East Asian survey, he also teaches courses on Medieval, Modern and Contemporary China, Sino-American Relations, and Chinese Revolutionary History and Literature.

Research Interests

He is currently working on a second book, Seward鈥檚 Shanghai: The Roots of American Diplomacy in China, which examines the origins of Sino-American relations through the lens of an American career diplomat, George F. Seward.

He is also co-editing a new textbook on the history of Modern China.

His first book, Chinese Capitalists versus the American Flour Industry, 1900-1910, investigates the use of western technology as both an economic and political tool in countering foreign influence during the late Qing dynasty.
